The week of July 10th - 13th the Stamford Golf Course hosted the 2023 Stamford Junior Golf Summer Clinic for kids ages 9 - 17. The clinic was filled to capacity with 56 students participating. The clinic day began at 9:00 AM with three stations of instruction for the kids which they rotated through in 25 minute blocks of time. The stations were full swing instruction on the driving range, chipping instruction at the newly created practice target area, and putting instruction on the practice green. After instruction and a break, the kids went out for up to two hours of on course play from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM with a mentor for our younger participants playing a scramble format, and our older participants went out on the course on their own just like a high school golf match for individual stroke play. The kids then came into the clubhouse for lunch to end the formal clinic day, but after lunch the kids were able to practice on the practice green and chipping station or go back out on the course with a family member for family play if they were so inclined. On our final day of the clinic, our younger kids participated in a modified version of the Masters Drive, Chip, and Putt competition for individual prizes, while our older kids went out on the course for stroke play and scramble play for individual and team prizes. It was a great week with fun times for all!!!
We would like to thank many people without whose help the clinic would not have been a great success:
Jim Schouller, longtime Stamford Golf Club professional, for working the range for full swing instruction all week, assisted by long time member Richie Beers.
Jim Lees, instructor at the PGM Program at SUNY Delhi, for working the chipping station all week and being involved as an instructor during our phys ed units at our local schools during the regular school year with Joe Burgin, also an instructor at the PGM Program at SUNY Delhi.
Jim Hamburger for working the practice green for putting instruction all week.
Our mentors who took kids on the course to help with play: Jim Hamburger, Nikkie Brandt, Gary LiCalzi, Jim Abel, John Toroni, Steve Fyfe, Mike Faulkner, and Jim Adair.
The entire Pro Shop Staff for their day to day help with carts, getting us range balls, and clearing the range each day after the days activities.
Joe Lambert, Ken Cole, and the entire greens crew staff for setting up the new chipping practice station and having the course ready for us each day,
Moon Sheridan and the entire 1897 Tavern staff for ordering and preparing our lunches each day for the kids.
The past and present Stamford Golf Club Board of Directors who supported us in putting the clinic together this year in a new form and style.
Dylan Thompson, professional at Christman’s Golf Course, who delivers and picks up our equipment to and from our local schools for the phys ed units during the school year as well as assisting with in class instruction at the schools.
Reynard's Insurance and Hughson and Benson Insurance for all their help with our insurance coverages for the entire year.
The Robinson Broadhurst Foundation, The O’Connor Foundation, the Northeast NY PGA of America, Stewart’s, and CORE Values all of whom awarded us grants for our clinic costs, lunches, and full year instruction.
